# Ring-Spun Cotton — Boring Label Textile Glossary

*Ring-spinning is the traditional method of twisting cotton fibres into yarn by feeding them through a ring and traveller mechanism, producing a smoother, stronger, and more refined thread than open-end spinning.*

## Understanding the Term

### Why the spinning method matters.

Ring-spinning feeds a drawn sliver of cotton through a high-speed ring and traveller that twists the fibres tightly together. The result is a compact, uniform yarn where every fibre wraps around its neighbours in the same direction.

The alternative — open-end (rotor) spinning — is faster and cheaper, but wraps fibres less uniformly. Open-end yarn has a rougher surface and lower tensile strength. For everyday utility fabrics, it works fine. For premium garments, ring-spun is non-negotiable.

Ring-spinning is slower by nature. The mechanical constraints of the ring and traveller limit production speed. This is why ring-spun cotton costs more — you're paying for time, precision, and a measurably better yarn structure.

## Why It Matters

### How ring-spinning improves the fabric.

The process that defines premium yarn.

- **Superior Hand Feel** — The tighter, more uniform twist creates a yarn with fewer loose ends protruding from the surface. This translates to a smoother, softer fabric against your skin.
- **Greater Strength** — Ring-spun yarn is 20–40% stronger than equivalent open-end yarn. The consistent twist distributes stress evenly across all fibres.
- **Better Print & Dye** — The smooth, uniform surface of ring-spun yarn absorbs dye more evenly and provides a cleaner base for printing. Colours appear more vivid and consistent.

## Our Standard

### Ring-spun from the first metre.

All our Supima yarn is ring-spun at controlled tension to ensure consistent twist across the entire production run. We never use open-end spinning, even for cost savings. The yarn quality determines everything downstream.

- **100%** Ring-Spun — Every thread in every garment

## Ring-spun cotton — your questions, answered.

Understanding yarn spinning methods.

**Is ring-spun cotton always better?**

For garments worn against the skin, yes. Ring-spun yarn is smoother, stronger, and more uniform. For industrial applications or disposable textiles, open-end is perfectly adequate and more cost-effective.

**How can I tell if a t-shirt is ring-spun?**

Feel the fabric surface. Ring-spun cotton is noticeably smoother with less surface fuzz. Labels should state 'ring-spun' or '100% ring-spun cotton.' Many premium brands explicitly call this out.

**Does ring-spinning affect shrinkage?**

The tighter twist can actually reduce shrinkage slightly, as the fibres are more locked into position. Combined with pre-shrinking treatments, ring-spun garments maintain their dimensions well.

**What's the price difference?**

Ring-spun yarn typically costs 20–40% more than open-end yarn from the same raw cotton. The difference is in the spinning speed — ring frames produce yarn roughly 5x slower than rotors.
