Cause one: belt buckle and waistband friction

Cause three: low-quality stitching that was always going to fail

Sometimes the hole is not wear at all. It is a manufacturing weak point that was present from the first wash.

Cheap tees often use a single-needle hem with wide, sparse stitching, which leaves gaps in the seam where fabric is more loosely held and more prone to unravelling into small holes. A denser double-needle hem distributes tension across more stitch points and resists this kind of failure far longer.

Moth damage tends to look different from friction wear. Moth holes are usually more randomly scattered across the garment, not clustered at a single contact point, and they often appear on tees that were stored folded in a drawer or wardrobe for weeks without being worn or moved.

If you find holes on multiple garments stored together, in random spots rather than a consistent friction zone, and especially if you spot small webbing or larvae casings in the drawer, that points to moths or carpet beetles rather than wear. The fix there is storage hygiene: cedar blocks, regular airing, and washing garments before long-term storage since detergent residue and body oils actually attract these insects.

For the vast majority of hem holes, though, this is not the cause, and treating a friction hole with mothballs will not fix anything.

How to actually stop it from recurring

If it is belt friction, the tee itself is not the problem, your styling is. Wearing your tee slightly untucked at the sides, or choosing trousers with a flatter waistband closure, removes the repeated contact entirely.

If it is construction quality, the honest answer is that no amount of careful washing fixes a hem that was under-stitched from the factory. If it is storage-related insect damage, address the storage environment, not the individual garment. A single cedar block in a drawer of five or six tees is usually enough to prevent recurrence.

A quick patch fix, if you catch it early

A tiny hem hole caught early, before it runs or widens, is genuinely repairable at home in under ten minutes with a needle and matching thread.

A simple whip stitch closing the gap, tied off with a double knot on the inside, holds for months if the surrounding fabric is still structurally sound. This only works while the hole is small and isolated. Once fraying spreads along the stitch line, a patch or repair becomes visible and the tee is better retired to loungewear than office rotation.
